Dendrobium Sheng Yi Bumblebee (2.5” pot blooming size)

New! This beautiful Dendrobium hybrid is Den. Stardust x unicum which makes it essentially three fourths the latter species. But the other 25%, shared by four other deciduous species, makes it somewhat more robust in size with larger flowers. The photo shows a plant we used in our exhibit at the South Carolina Orchid Show in April 2024. It was absolutely breathtaking. While it is “staged” in a ceramic pot, the plant is actually flowering in a 2.5” pot with growth similar in height to the plants we are offering here for sale. All of them should flower profusely in the spring of 2025. This type of Dendrobium prefers to grow in a pot small for the plant size and can be mounted or put in a basket if you are willing to keep up with its water needs during the growing season. From about May to September, which in the most active growth, plants should not ever dry out completely and benefit from frequent water and regular fertilization. As fall commences, less water is needed, and fertilizer should be withheld until after flowering when new growth starts again. In the wild the species that make up this hybrid go with very little rainfall from mid fall to mid spring, but they do receive dew and mist many nights, so we recommend you allow the plants to dry slightly between watering through January, and then dry completely in between until budding is well underway. Cooler nights down to at least 60F or below during this time will enhance flowering. If growing indoors, putting the plant close to the window where some of the outside cold lowers the temperature might work. A little attention to the seasonal needs of this orchid will be very rewarding!
